It is the weekend, why do I have less money than I should have?

There will be a change to the way we process regular payments into your account and regular payments out of your account over the weekend.

From the 13th January 2018, we will no longer process regular customer transactions whether that is credits in (Salary, Benefits) and / or payments / debits out (direct debits, standing orders) on a Saturday morning . These will now be processed on a Monday morning (or next working day after a Bank Holiday) meaning your available balance at the weekend via ATMs, digital and mobile will be displayed differently.

Here’s what you need to know

This change means that you will have full access to all the available funds in your account at the weekend and you will need to ensure that you keep enough funds in your account for any payments that are due to debit your account on the Monday (or next working day after a Bank Holiday).

Payments into your account at the weekend (like your salary, pension or other regular income)

Up until but excluding the 13th January 2018: Any regular payments due to be paid in to your account on a Monday (or next working day after a Bank Holiday) are available to you from the Saturday.

From 13 January 2018: Any regular payments due to be paid in to your account on a Monday (or next working day after a Bank Holiday) will only be available to you from the Monday (or next working day after a Bank Holiday) and not the Saturday as before. Just make sure there’s enough money in your account to cover you for any spending over the weekend.

Payments out of your account at the weekend (like direct debits and standing orders)

Up until but excluding the 13th January 2018: Any payments due to be paid out of your account on a Monday are taken from your account on the Saturday morning, meaning that you have less money available to spend at the weekend.

From 13 January 2018: Any payments due to be paid out of your account on a Monday will leave your account on the Monday (or next working day after a Bank Holiday), meaning this money will be available to you over the weekend.

This means that you can now spend / use all of your money over the weekend because payments such as direct debits / standing orders due to be paid on a Monday will no longer be processed on the Saturday. You will need to be aware of any payments such as direct debits / standing orders which are due to be paid out on the Monday and ensure that you have enough money in your account on the Monday to pay for these.

If you do not have enough money in your account for the debits/payments leaving your account on the Monday, you could see an increase in overdraft charges / unpaid item fees. Our mobile app and the text alerts service are a great way of keeping track on your available balance.

FAQs

Payments into your account at the weekend (like your salary, pension or other regular income)

How will this affect regular payments (like your salary, pension or other regular income) into my account at the weekend?

Any regular payments due to come into your account on a Monday such as salary, pension or benefit payments will only show and be available from the Monday (or next working day after a Bank Holiday) rather than the Saturday. Why is the Bank making these changes so that my regular payments are not being handled the way they used to?

This is a regulatory change that the bank has had to make; we are doing this to ensure we abide by procedures set out by the government and the regulators. We will communicate these changes to all of our customers in October 2017 and there will be regular updates to our website.

How will this affect regular payments (like direct debits and standing orders) due out of my account on a Monday?

All regular payments that you expect to make on a Monday will no longer show on your account on Saturday. Instead if you are due to pay a Direct Debit or Standing Order on a Monday, it will show and leave your account on the Monday (or next working day after a Bank Holiday).

Over the weekend will I still see other payments which are due out of my account on a Monday?

Transactions such as ATM withdrawals or Faster Payments will still show on the day you make these transactions.
