How can we help you?

When viewing your transactions on the Mobile App you will now see the most recent pending transaction highlighted at the top of your transaction list. When viewing your pending transactions in Online Banking, you will see your pending transaction at the top of View Transactions page.

What is a pending transaction?

Pending transactions are transactions you have made with your debit card which are waiting to be deducted from your account. The merchant normally tells us about your transaction as soon as it happens and we set aside those funds by taking them off your balance to make sure you don’t spend the money again.

However this process can occasionally be delayed if the merchant takes longer to notify us. This is what is called a ‘pending transaction’ and you will see this reflected in your ‘Balance Including Pending Transactions’. The transaction normally completes in full a day or two later when it will then also be reflected in your ‘Account Balance’.

Occasionally you won’t see a debit card payment as a pending transaction. This can be down to timing or where the merchant has not been able to contact us immediately because you have made an ‘offline’ transaction. These are usually on planes, boats, trains or for parking or tolls so it’s important you always ensure you have enough funds in your account before making a transaction.

Why is there a small charge showing in pending transactions on my bank account?

Some merchants will put a transaction through to ensure the card is valid, this transaction will remove itself or combine with the overall authorised total. Typical examples of these are pay at pumps and ordering grocery deliveries from supermarkets.

If you notice a £0.00 transaction this could be a result of you recently registering for a service such as Netflix, Amazon, Uber etc. and is known as an account verification payment.

Why there is a £0.00 transaction in my pending transaction with the location of an ATM?

When you request a pin reminder to unblock your pin, a transaction will appear in your pending with the location of the ATM where you completed the unblock process. This will remove itself from your pending history.

I'm concerned about the pending transaction

If you're worried about a pending transaction and don’t believe it was made by yourself, we recommend you follow the actions below before contacting us as you'll need to discuss with the retailer and ensure the transaction has cleared onto your account and is no longer pending before we can support you:

  • Search the retailer name quoted on your statement using a search engine such as Google or Bing
  • Contact the retailer directly to establish what you have been charged for and if necessary, initiate a refund
  • If you are unable to identify the retailer review our Merchants List to see if the retailer has a different trading name to the one you'd expect
  • If you have been unable to resolve the issue with the retailer directly and want to challenge the transaction we can then help you claim a refund once the transaction has cleared and is no longer pending

If you still don't recognise it, you can find more information about the options available to you on our Card Payment Support page.
