I get an error message ‘Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. Turn on TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2’’

To help keep you and the bank safe and secure, we have upgraded our Online Banking security, and as a result Internet Explorer 9 and 10 will be affected when attempting to log into Online Banking.

We recommend that for optimum safety and security when using Online Banking, you always use the latest version of your chosen browser that your operating system will support, or use an alternative browser.

An up to date browser provides superior protection against scams, viruses, Trojans, phishing attacks and other threats. They also resolve security vulnerabilities present in your current browser.

Alternatively, you can enable TLS on Internet Explorer 9 and 10 if you would prefer to continue using these browsers, see below on how to do this:

What is TLS?

TLS is Transport Layer Security. This is a security standard that is used to create a secure online connection.

When you log in to Online Banking, a secure connection is established between our server and your browser to prevent theft of data or tampering; TLS is used to create that secure connection. TLS1.2 is the most recent version of the standard and offers the most robust protection.

We have adopted this version to maximise the protection for our customers.

To ensure that you are benefiting from the protection this offers you will need to ensure that your browser is configured to support it.

How do I enable it?

In order to enable TLS (Transport Layer Security) 1.2 in your browser follow the steps below:

These instructions relate to Internet Explorer, the steps for other browsers may vary. If you need guidance for your chosen browser, please refer to your browser help pages.

  1. Select Tools (this may be shown as a cog icon)
  2. From the menu then select ‘Internet options’
  3. In the pop up box select the ‘Advanced’ tab
  4. In the ‘Advanced’ section scroll down towards the bottom to the ‘Security’ section. Under this you will need to ensure the ‘Use TLS1.2’ box is ticked
  5. Once you have ticked this, click ‘Apply’ and then ‘OK’ to save the changes. If the box is already ticked just click ‘OK’

Please note, if the tick options have been greyed out this means that you may need administration rights on your PC or network in order to apply changes to advanced settings. If you are unable to enable this feature please refer to your IT support team for assistance.
