Can I use my debit card abroad?

Using a NatWest VISA debit card is an easy and convenient way of paying for goods and services wherever you see the VISA logo.

You can also use your card worldwide to pay for goods and services and withdraw cash, just look out for the VISA logo shown on your card.

Your card is accepted at over 29 million retailers and 1 million cash machines worldwide. You also benefit from purchase protection when using your debit card to pay for goods and services. Charges apply for using your debit card abroad and for certain transactions in the UK.

If you intend to use your personal debit card abroad it is advisable to let us know. Registering your travel plans with us can reduce the likelihood of your debit card transactions being blocked. If you are signed up for Online Banking, you can log on and register details of your trip yourself. Alternatively you can call Telephone Banking or pop into your local branch where our staff would be happy to help do this for you. Just make sure you let us know at least 24 hours in advance.

Registering your travel plans applies to your personal VISA debit card. If you intend to use your Credit Card abroad, please contact the Credit Card Centre directly to advise them of your travel plans.

If you have used your card and the payment has been declined, you should check that:

  • You have sufficient funds in the account
  • The merchant accepts your card type
  • Your card is active

Please have your customer number and PIN ready as this will enable your call to be answered faster and more securely. These are the same details you use to log in to online banking.

It's also worth making sure you give us your current mobile number, just in case we need to contact you whilst you are away. Your service provider may charge you to receive calls or texts abroad so it's best to check with them before you go.
