How do I cancel a direct debit?

Personal current accounts

You can cancel a direct debit online up to 8.20pm (UK time) on the day the payment is due to be taken from your account.

Before you cancel a direct debit you should usually let the payee know that you're about to do this.

Your balance might not look as you would expect when cancelling a direct debit. Visit When can I cancel a direct debit? for some examples.

Cancelling a direct debit using your mobile banking app

  1. Log in to your Mobile Banking app
  2. Select the account that the direct debit is set up against
  3. Select the 'Direct debits' section
  4. Select the direct debit you want cancelled. You will see the detail of the direct debit, and the option to cancel the direct debit will appear at the bottom of this screen

Cancelling a direct debit online

  1. Log in to your Online Banking at www.onlinebanking.natwest.com (opens in a new window)
  2. Click the 'Payment and transfers' link.
  3. Under Direct debits click 'Manage direct debits'.
  4. You will now see all the direct debits you currently have.
  5. Select a direct debit and click 'View direct debit' to view more details or 'Cancel direct debit' then 'Confirm' to cancel it.
  6. You will then see a confirmation screen confirming cancellation of the direct debit.

It may take up to 24 hours for the balance of your account to be adjusted.

If you cancel your direct debit at or after 8.20pm (UK time) on the day the payment is due, future payments will have been cancelled. However the payment due on that day will already have been taken and we will not have been able to retrieve it.

If you don't have access to Online Banking

You can cancel a Direct Debit by completing our digital Cancel Direct Debit form (opens in a new window).

The form will ask you for the email addresses of the people with signing permissions on the account.

We'll then email your signatories and ask them to authorise the request by uploading an image of their signature.
