I don't have a card-reader, how can I make a payment?

Online Banking

If you want to set up or amend a payee in Online Banking you will need a card-reader. How do I order a card-reader?

However, you don't need one to arrange a payment to someone you have already paid online.

Mobile banking

You don't need a card-reader if you use our Mobile Banking app. You can make payments of up to £250 by using the account number and sort code of the person or company you want to pay.

You can make up to 5 payments each working day subject to the £250 limit, or 20 payments to a limit of £1000 over 4 working days.

You can also make payments of up to £250 through the Pay Your Contacts feature on our Mobile Banking app.

How to make a payment using the mobile app

Telephone banking

If your Telephone Banking service is fully activated, you can set up and make a payment over the phone.

Please have your customer number and PIN ready as this will enable your call to be answered faster and more securely. These are the same details you use to log in to online banking.


You can make a payment at your local branch. Do remember to take your debit card and proof of ID with you. Please see the forms of ID we can accept (opens in a new window).

We do suggest you order a card-reader so that you can set up and amend payees in the future.

To order a card-reader:

  1. Log in to www.nwolb.com (opens in a new window)
  2. Select 'Security' from the menu.
  3. In the 'Using a card-reader' section, select 'Order a card-reader'.
  4. Select a reason from the drop down menu.
  5. Select 'Confirm'.
